I'm fundraising to fight youth homelessness

I am getting active in the name of team building, mental health, and physical health, but most importantly to Get Fit to For Homeless Youth.

Youth homelessness affects 44,000 young Australians, and each night, 1 in 3 young people are being turned away from supported accommodation services.

The Property Industry Foundation exists to solve this problem of youth homelessness. We bring together the property and construction industry to build homes for homeless youth through our PIF House Program.

I am delighted to be taking part in the 2nd Property Industry Foundation 30 Day Fitness Challenge!

Last year I managed to cover 300kms in the month as well as raise $1,123.78 and I am hoping to beat both targets this year!!

Without the support from my family, a loving home to grow up in and the encouragement from my mum to study, graduate, go travelling – I would not be in the lucky position that I am now.

Following this, I find it really upsetting and hard to imagine that there are thousands of teenagers not just in Australia, but also worldwide who are not lucky enough to have had the same upbringing us me. Too often we turn a blind eye to the poverty going on around us and rely on others to do their part, so I’ve decided to do something about this and I have committed to walking/running/cycling 350km over 30 days alongside my Design & Build and Public Sector People colleagues.

We kicked off our challenge with an hour of yoga and meditation at Body Mind Life in Surry Hills last week.  An hour of stretching and relaxation was just what I needed ahead of my 300km month of walking, running and cycling!

Throughout the last week I have walked 79kms and cycled 15kms. And whilst I will cover most of my kms walking, I am aiming to squeeze in a few cycles and at least x1 10km run – I despise running so this will be my big challenge. If you would like to send a wee donation my way to spur me along, I would be really grateful.

I just wanted to finish with this message that was sent out by Kate Mills last week which really stuck with me all weekend…

“If donating is not option, then just take the time to make eye contact with homeless people you see on the street and if you think it is appropriate, ask them how you can help. One thing rough sleepers report is that when we turn our eyes away it makes them feel invisible. It’s just a small thing that could really change someone’s day.”
